Earth Day Activities at Glendale Acres Elementary School

Earth Day falls on April 22, 2014 this year.  Since this is during Spring Break, the Go Green Team of Glendale Acres Elementary School made plans for everyone at the school to celebrate Earth Day during the week of April 7-11.  Every day of the week, a different Go Green Team member read a book about caring for the earth on the school’s Bear News Network.  Also, fliers were sent home to parents prior to April 7 requesting that they send in specific recycled items to be used for an Earth Day project.  The recycled items came pouring in!

In addition, parent volunteers glued together craft sticks in the shape of picture frames for the Earth Day project.  The students then decorated the assembled picture frames on April 11 with the recycled items.  What’s more, everyone wore green on April 11! Furthermore, all students planted grass seeds in biodegradable cups to take home and care for.  Moreover, the Go Green Team members planted flowers in the ceramic planters located on the school grounds.  Glendale Acres Elementary School’s Earth Day Celebration Week was a great success!

Singer, storyteller and multi-instrumentalist David Digiuseppe presented “A Bag of Songs and Stories” at Glendale Acres Elementary School in a school-wide assembly on January 24 thanks to the Artists in Schools program. Then on February 10, the students and staff participated in grade-level high energy assemblies presented by Poetry Alive!  The Art Council’s Artists in Schools program is sponsored in part by the Cumberland County Schools, the Fort Bragg Schools, the North Carolina Arts Council, the City of Fayetteville, and Cumberland County.  Glendale Acres’ Parent Teacher Association matched the funding for both of the Artists in Schools programs with the Arts Council.

Glendale Acres Elementary Staff and Students “Go Active With Ronald McDonald!”
Submitted by Deborah Dowd

The staff and students of Glendale Acres Elementary School started off 2014 by learning about the importance of including physical activity in their daily routines.  Everyone at the school participated in an exciting “Go Active With Ronald McDonald!” assembly on January 7.  It was not only lots of fun, but very informative.

Moreover, the teachers look forward to working the counter at McDonald’s on Owen Drive near Boone Trail.  Glendale Acres’ McTeacher Night will be on February 25, 2014 from 5:00-8:00 p.m.  Students and parents visiting McDonald’s that evening will enjoy being waited on by their teachers.  The school will also earn a percentage of the sales.  The Glendale Acres Elementary School family truly appreciates the community support of McDonald’s.
