Storyteller using hands for storyStoryteller David Novak Visits Glendale Acres Elementary

Thanks to a matching “Artists in Schools” grant with Glendale Acres’ Parent Teacher Association and The Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County, students and staff were treated to a wonderful storytelling assembly on October 29.  This was the first time that David Novak had performed for the Fayetteville Arts Council and he truly enjoyed his experience at Glendale Acres.  David has performed across the country and he was a Master Storyteller for the Disney Institute at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida.  He has written four picture books and made seven audio recordings.  His assembly entitled First Books in hands and strings was well received by the Glendale Acres Academy family and they are most grateful.

This project is supported by the Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County with funds from the North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, Cumberland County Schools and private contributions.

Wellness Tip: Childhood Obesity Awareness Month

Image of several children running through grass with caption of Childhood Obesity Awareness MonthOne in three children in the United States is overweight or obese. Childhood obesity puts kids at risk for health problems that were once seen only in adults, like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease.

The good news is that childhood obesity can be prevented. In honor of National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, CCS encourages your family to make healthy changes together.

  • Get active outside: Walk around the neighborhood, go on a bike ride, or play basketball at the park.
  • Limit screen time: Keep screen time (time spent on the computer, watching TV, or playing video games) to 2 hours or less a day.
  • Make healthy meals: Buy and serve more vegetables, fruits, and whole-grain foods.

Taking small steps as a family can help your child stay at a healthy weight.

Kindergarten teacher Barbara White was presented with a $1,000 check for Glendale Acres
Elementary School on August 12, 2019, by Georgia Popp from the North Carolina Chapter of the
Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA). The $1,000 was
awarded for a STEM Teaching Tool Program for 2019. Glendale Acres School will be
purchasing Family Engagement STEM packs and Learn to Code file folder games to utilize with
the students. The Family Engagement STEM packs can also be used during parent involvement
events at the school. The Glendale Acres Elementary School staff, students, and family
members are very grateful and excited! The grant money will truly be beneficial for the school,
especially due to the new implementation of a Makerspace room as well as Learning to Code
instruction taking place in the Computer Lab.
