Eagle Scout Service Project Benefits Glendale Acres Elementary School

Matt Mooneyham of Boy Scout Troop 740 in Fayetteville built four “buddy benches” for Glendale Acres Elementary School for his Eagle Scout Service Project. Eagle Scout is the highest rank attainable in Boy Scouting and one of the requirements is for the scout to plan, carry out, and complete a project that will benefit the community in some way. Matt worked with Principal Dr. Dees to figure out a project that would benefit the school. He raised money to fund the project and worked with other Scouts and volunteers to build and paint the benches and brought them to the school on March 23, 2018.  Matt is a senior at Terry Sanford High School.  The Glendale Acres Elementary School family is most grateful to Matt for the wonderful ‘buddy benches,” as well as for the community support of the project!”

Didgeridoo Down Under Performs at Glendale Acres Elementary

The students and staff of Glendale Acres Elementary School traveled to Australia during a wonderfully interactive “Artists in Schools” assembly on March 5, 2018.  Rob Thomas of Didgeridoo Down Under presented an outstanding program. Rob has been performing with and making didgeridoos for more than 20 years.  He has recorded several CDs, has produced music for numerous films, and performs nationwide.  He lives in North Carolina and New Mexico, and he was so grateful to perform for us at Glendale Acres.   “The Arts Council’s Artists in Schools program is supported in part by Cumberland County Schools, the North Carolina Arts Council, the City of Fayetteville and Cumberland County.”  We appreciate The Arts Council and Glendale Acres Academy PTA for matching the grant for this program.

Glendale Acres celebrates “Read Across America” during the week of February 26-March 5, 2018.  Our students participated in different activities daily to celebrate the beloved author Dr. Seuss and his characters. We will finish the celebration with “Didgeridoo Down Under” on March 5, 2018.  Our students celebrated Dr. Seuss Birthday on Friday, March 2nd by dressing as their favorite Dr. Seuss characters.  Mr. Hussey and Mrs. Dunlap classes were a hit as the “Sneetches”.

Glendale Acres celebrated Digital Learning Day on February 22, 2018.  The school showcased how we use electronic devices, educational apps and software to strengthen the students learning experience. Google Expeditions AR Pioneer Program visited Glendale Acres to showcase their program. Digital Learning Day has provided a powerful venue for education leaders to highlight great teaching practices and showcase innovative teachers, leaders, and instructional technology programs that are improving student outcomes.

Mrs. White winnerCongratulations to Kindergarten Teacher Barbara White!

Mrs. White was nominated by a parent and selected as a  WKML 95.7 Elementary Reading Club of the Week teacher.  Sarah Weaver  of WKLM visited the classroom on February 20, 2018 and brought lots of wonderful treats for Mrs. White and the students.   Moreover, the students enjoyed listening to Ms.Weaver read a book to them.  We appreciate the community support of WKML 95.7 radio station!

CountingNumber Drummer Assembly is a Hit

On Friday, February 16, 2018, the students, staff, and parents were treated to a spectacular math and music assembly presented by Troy Kryzalka. Mr. Kryzalka has spent over twenty years working in music and education. Thousands of students and educators throughout the United States have enjoyed his program. He has also been recognized and awarded by Yale University for his innovative teaching method. The assembly was truly a one-of-a-kind experience that energized and inspired all the participants. We are so grateful to the Arts Council and Glendale Acres PTA for matching the grant for the fantastic Number Drummer assembly. “The Arts Council’s Artists in Schools program is supported in part by Cumberland County Schools, the North Carolina Arts Council, the City of Fayetteville and Cumberland County.”
