Citizenship Day Celebration at Glendale Acres Elementary School

Submitted by Deborah Dowd

All staff and students of Glendale Acres Elementary School celebrated the September 17th Citizenship Day on Friday, September 15, 2017.  Everyone gathered around the school’s flagpole for a special ceremony.  Principal Dr. Julie Dees shared with everyone some information about Citizenship Day and the United States Constitution.  She then introduced Terry Sanford High School’s AFJROTC  to present a flag ceremony.  Jr Cadet Quintero directed the cadets in an educational and moving presentation. Afterwards, Glendale Acres’ music teacher Carlos Tyson led everyone in the song, “My Country Tis of Thee.”  The Glendale Acres Elementary School family is very appreciative of Timothy K. Peedin, Capt. USAF (Ret) and the Terry Sanford High School AFJROTC for their community support.

Bordeaux Branch of Cumberland County Public Library visited Glendale Acres, May 22, 2017, to launch their Summer Reading Program. This year’s theme for students through fifth grade is  Ready, Set: Read! .  The program runs from  June 1 to August 15, 2017. To participate in the summer reading program, students were given a reading log to track the time they spend reading. As they reach their reading goals, they will be  eligible for a variety of prizes. Students can earn prizes when they reach four, eight, twelve, and twenty-four hours of reading. This includes reading independently, having someone read to them or attending a library program. Prizes include toys, books, a book bag and a C.C. Leopard certificate of reading accomplishment.   We hope all our Glendale Bears will participate and keep reading this summer!

Gray Seal Puppets

Grey Seal Puppets Visit Glendale Acres Elementary School

Submitted by Deborah Dowd

The Glendale Acres Elementary School family enjoyed a wonderful Grey Seal Puppets assembly on March 30.  The puppets shared favorite folk tales from around the world with the students, staff and parents. The Grey Seal Puppets have a famous trademark whimsical approach to storytelling and exquisite puppet design.  The company has a thirty year history and has won such honors as three Citations of Excellence from the International Puppeteers of America and the Award for Leadership in Theatre from the NC Theater Conference.

The assembly was funded by Glendale Acres PTA and the Arts Council.  “The Arts Council Artists in Schools program is supported in part by the Cumberland County Schools, the North Carolina Arts Council, the City of Fayetteville and Cumberland County.”
